Why this word is great
VENGE — [Verb] To inflict punishment or retribution for a wrong; to avenge. From Middle English vengen, from Old French venger, from Latin vindicare ("to claim, avenge, punish"). Unlike “avenge,” which cloaks its blow in righteous duty, or “revenge,” which curls a lip with private satisfaction, to venge is the stark, archaic act itself, stripped of moral costume. It is the sharpening of a blade at a cold hearth, the patient setting of a trap, or the deliberate pouring of a poison—the execution of a debt that is not justice, but a ledger finally balanced. An act that closes a circle but leaves nothing living within it.
