swaporama

Etymology

From swap + -orama.

Why this word is great

SWAPORAMA — [Noun] A communal event where participants donate unwanted items to be claimed freely by others, without expectation of exchange. From swap ("exchange") + -orama (suffix denoting a large-scale event or spectacle, as in panorama). Unlike a flea market (where money changes hands) or a swap meet (where goods are bartered), a swaporama operates on the anarchic generosity of pure circulation. It is the sagging card table of mismatched mugs, the orphaned paperback with a stranger’s name inscribed inside, the single rollerblade left behind like a fossil of some forgotten sport—proof that one person’s clutter is another’s ephemeral treasure, and that value, unmoored from commerce, drifts on unpredictable tides.

noun

  1. An event at which all participants donate items which can then be taken for free by other participants.“Among the other official events were a history and clarification of National Endowment for the Arts programs in photography presented by NEA's Kathy Gauss, a number of discussions revolving around psychology and perception as they related to photography, and the ever-popular print and slide "swaporamas."”
