stepwell

Etymology

From step + well.

Why this word is great

STEPWELL — [Noun] A well in which the water can be reached by descending a set of steps. From step ("a flat surface for placing the foot when ascending or descending") + well ("a hole sunk into the ground to access water"). Unlike "baoli" (which carries the weight of ritual and ornament) or "reservoir" (which speaks only to function), a stepwell is both staircase and cistern, a marriage of necessity and geometry. It is the cool, echoing descent into shadow, the symmetry of stone steps vanishing into dark water, the way the earth holds its breath as you go deeper—proof that even in the driest places, humanity has always known how to dig toward what sustains it.
