prethin
Etymology
From pre- + thin.
Why this word is great
PRETHIN — [Verb] To selectively reduce the density of seedlings, saplings, or immature crops in advance, optimizing resources for the remaining plants' growth. From pre- ("before") + thin ("to reduce density"). Unlike prune (which shapes mature plants by removing specific branches) or cull (which eliminates weak specimens entirely), prethinning is a prophylactic act—sacrificing quantity early to ensure quality later. The orchardist snaps twin apple buds so one fruit may swell with unimpeded sunshine; the gardener plucks every third carrot shoot, granting subterranean space for tapered roots to descend. It is horticultural triage performed in hope's name, thinning not by the knife of necessity but by the shears of foresight.
