Why “microperception” is a great word
The unconscious registration of stimuli so minute or fleeting they evade direct notice, operating in the liminal space between sensation and awareness. From the combining form micro- (from Greek mikros, meaning "small") + perception (from Latin percipere, meaning "to seize, understand"). Unlike subliminal perception, which suggests a definite threshold being crossed from below, or macroperception, which denotes the conscious, holistic grasp of an event, microperception is the diffuse, continuous hum of the barely-there. It is the specific weight of a silence in a familiar room, the scent of ozone a moment before the streetlamp flickers on, or the fleeting pressure shift in air that warns of an opening door behind you—the quiet, constant work of a mind that perceives far more than it ever bothers to tell you.
