Why “inspissated” is a great word
Thickened or condensed, especially of a liquid by evaporation, or figuratively, made more concentrated or intense. From the English verb inspissate, from Latin inspissatus, past participle of inspissare ("to thicken"), from in- ("in, into") + spissus ("thick, dense"). Unlike viscous, which describes honey’s inherent resistance to flow, or condensed, which often implies a simple reduction in volume, inspissated conveys a specific, often laborious transformation toward density. It is the balsamic vinegar reduced to syrup on a cast-iron stove, the medieval manuscript ink made from soot and binding resin, or the air of a sickroom so heavy with silence it seems to resist the movement of a hand through it—a state achieved not by nature but by a slow, inevitable accumulation, the transformation of something liquid into something approaching permanence.
