Why this word is great
HOMUNCULUS — [Noun] A small, artificially created human or human-like being, or a miniature adult once believed to be present in human sperm. From the Latin homunculus, a diminutive of homō ("man") + -culus (diminutive suffix). Unlike "golem" (a clay-bound creature animated by sacred incantation) or "doll" (a lifeless plaything), a homunculus is a deliberate, often alchemical, attempt to distill humanity into a vessel no larger than a thumb. It is the wriggling figure in a glass vial, the tiny scribe in Paracelsus’s fevered imaginings, the grotesque shadow of a man curled like a question mark in the bottom of a flask—proof that even our smallest creations bear the weight of our hubris.
