Why this word is great
ETHNOSUICIDE — [Noun] The destruction of an ethnic identity by members of that ethnicity. From ethno- ("relating to ethnicity") + suicide ("self-destruction"). Unlike "ethnocide" (which is violence imposed from without) or "cultural assimilation" (which is a slow, often passive absorption), ethnosuicide is a conscious unraveling, a turning of the knife inward. It is the last speaker of a language refusing to teach it to their children, the burning of ancestral records in the name of progress, or the deliberate adoption of another’s tongue until the old one withers in the throat—a quiet, collective vanishing, as if the soul of a people could be willed into oblivion.
