ETHNOSECTARIANISM — [Noun] The condition or practice of organizing society, politics, and identity primarily along combined ethnic and religious sectarian lines. From ethnosectarian, a blend of ethno- (from Greek ethnos, "nation, people") and sectarian (from Latin secta, "school of thought, faction"), + the suffix -ism (denoting a system, principle, or ideological movement). Unlike sectarianism, which fractures along doctrinal lines alone, or pluralism, which envisions a mosaic of co-equal groups, ethnosectarianism compounds tribe and creed into a single, impermeable marker of belonging.
