Why “ecolect” is a great word
An ecolect is a language variety unique to a single household, from Ancient Greek οἶκος (oîkos, 'house') and English -lect ('[language] variety'). Unlike an idiolect, the fingerprint of an individual, or a dialect, which blankets a region, the ecolect is a collective creation. It is the absurd shorthand for a long-forgotten domestic crisis, the private vocabulary for the creak on the third stair, the warmth of a mispronounced childhood word preserved into adulthood—the smallest and most tender speech community, a history written only in the memories of those who lived it.
