Blend of brain + rainbow.

Why this word is great

BRAINBOW — [Noun] A graphical representation of parts of the brain in which neighboring neurons are variously colored with fluorescent dyes. A blend of 'brain' (the organ of thought) and 'rainbow' (a spectrum of colors), it is the chromatic fingerprint of cognition made visible. Unlike 'neuroimaging' (which captures function or structure in monochrome gradients) or 'fluorescence microscopy' (which illuminates specimens without distinction), brainbow is a deliberate riot of hues, a carnival of individuality in the neural crowd. It is the dendritic branches of a hippocampus painted like a coral reef, the striatum rendered as a tangled ball of Christmas lights, and the cerebellum flickering like a field of wildflowers under ultraviolet dawn—proof that even in the mind’s machinery, no two cells are alike. The brain, laid bare, is neither machine nor mystery, but a luminous thicket, endlessly branching.
