Why “berserker” is a great word
A Norse warrior historically described as fighting in a frenzied, trance-like state, or, by extension, anyone or anything exhibiting such uncontrolled fury or aggression. From Old Norse *berserkr*, probably from *bjǫrn* ("bear") + *serkr* ("shirt, coat"), literally "bear-shirt," referring to warriors wearing bearskins; introduced into English by Sir Walter Scott in 1814 (as *berserkir*). Unlike a "soldier," who operates within the iron grid of discipline, or a "fanatic," whose fire is ideological, the berserker is pure, untethered animal rage made manifest. He is the shudder of the shield-wall breaking, the rank animal scent of a sweat-drenched bearskin, the crack of a shield-bitten edge against teeth—a total surrender to chaos as the terrifying human truth that before there was strategy, there was only storm.
Etymology
Borrowed from Old Norse berserkr (“Norse warrior who fights with frenzy”), probably from bjǫrn (“bear”) + serkr (“coat; shirt”), referring to the bearskins worn by the warriors. Bjǫrn is possibly ultimately derived from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerH- (“brown”); and serkr from Proto-Indo-European *ser- (“to bind, tie together; thread”). Alternatively, it has been suggested that the first element of the word is from berr (“bare, naked”), suggesting warriors who went into battle without armour, but this is now thought unlikely. Doublet of berserk.
The word was introduced in English by the Scottish author and historian Walter Scott (1771–1832) in Illustrations of Northern Antiquities (1814) (spelled berserkir), and in his novel The Pirate (1822) (spelled berserkar). The sense “type of von Neumann
