Why “adorcism” is a great word
ADORCISM — [Noun] The voluntary or desired possession by a spirit, often ritually induced for curative or placatory purposes. From the Latin prefix ad- ("to, toward") + exorcism, coined by anthropologist Luc de Heusch. Unlike *exorcism* (which denotes the forcible expulsion of an unwanted spirit) or *invocation* (which calls for a spirit’s presence but stops short of welcoming it within), adorcism is a deliberate, porous surrender. It is the ceremonial drumbeat guiding the dancer’s limbs, the oracle whose voice is lent to a ghost, and the patient's body offered as a vessel to contain a capricious force—a fragile, temporary treaty between the human and the unseen, where the cure is to be filled rather than emptied.
noun
- The voluntary, desired or curative possession by a spirit.“Banga, which translates as "huge volume", commemorates the 13th Century slave and Sufi saint Sidi Marzuq, who was frequently aided by a collective of rûwahînes or spirit allies. The opposite of an exorcism, Banga is an adorcism, inviting a spirit to possess you and then finding ways to accommodate and accept it once this happens.”
